As the state of Queensland prepares for the full brunt of Cyclone Alfred, Brisbane Roar have flown out for their upcoming A-League match without two experienced stars.
Per Marco Monteverde, the Roar will be without Florin Berenguer and Ben Halloran for Saturday’s clash against Adelaide United at Coopers Stadium, with the pair electing to remain with their families ahead of the damaging storm.
Ruben Zadkovich’s side were not given the option by the Australian Professional Leagues (APL) to postpone the fixture, ultimately forcing the players and staff to make a quick decision concerning travel.
However, they were provided the option by the club to stay with loved ones during an uncertain period.
If more players had opted to stay home, the APL would have been more than likely to reschedule Brisbane’s match against the Reds to a later date.
“We’ve been working with the playing group, PFA (Professional Footballers Australia) and the APL over the last few days regarding travel and the match schedule,” Brisbane Roar COO Zac Anderson said.
“Following discussions with players, the majority of the squad was clear in their intent to play and the team has flown out early in preparation.
“We will continue to monitor the situation, and do what we can for staff and players’ families in Queensland.”
Brisbane is preparing to face Adelaide on Saturday at 5pm AEDT in the A-League Men, with no available flights back to Queensland until the following day.
The A-League Women game scheduled for Perry Park on Sunday afternoon between Brisbane Roar and Melbourne City has been postponed, with the APL working with the clubs and other stakeholders to reschedule the match.
