The tournament has seen headlines grabbed from the very best on all six continents (FIFA Media Hub)
The second matchday of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has come to an end, so here is a look at what is remaining and who is left standing in each of the tweleve groups at the global showpiece in North America.
GROUP A
The Co-hosts Mexico are at their very best, with a squad looking primed to define the modern era of the Mexican game and a round of 32 clash beckoning where potential opponents range vividly from Scotland to Curacao.
Simply put Javier Aguirre’s team will look to finish strong and assess all options at his disposal. Should the path be made easier in such a case, Czechia will be in a potential place to seal third in the group, although Mexico’s phenomenal record at the Azetca is to overcome.
For Korea Republic, their frustrating bout in Guadalajara against the co-hosts mean a strong performance on just three points will be required.
You can look out for Lee Kang-In playing an advanced midfield role to punish a Bafana Bafana team looking to save their tournament with last chance heroics. For themselves any counter can rely on their dynamic wing play and reliable number 9 in Lyle Foster to be there if and when the moment calls.

GROUP B
Canada and Switzerland came alive in matchday two; a fiesty contest in Vancover rightly emerges as a result, but exactly how well the co-hosts can play knowing the obvious step up in quality of their opponent is not inherently obvious.
The Swiss found what they were after against Bosnia no less through Murat Yakin’s suprise subsitiution candidates in Johan Manzambi and Ruben Vargas. If you drop either Dan Ndoye or Breel Embolo for the former does this disrupt rhythm or unlock their true potential?
Qatar and Bosnia meanwhile need their matchday one selves to emerge. Qatar’s efforts turned ugly and morale could be low, For manager Julen Lopetegui, he was famously knocked out of Russia 2018 as manager of Spain by the hosts in the round of 16, a game sure to come to mind when knowing the fate of the Arab nation is alive and well under his stewardship.
Bosnia’s upside comes through a freedom to play their game, restrictive setups and the benching of one or two players, namely Amir Bajraktarevic left them hanging on against their more fancied opponents on matchdays one and two. The situation is different now and the knockouts await if all goes well.
GROUP C
Brazil and Morocco may honestly enter a shootout to decided top spot. Brazil’s lack of consistent form may be at play as they aim to hold first, while Morocco’s lethal best against Haiti, who’ve degressed with the tournament, could be enough to edge things out.
Scotland can’t be written out of the dynamic either, they are plenty capable of stripping Brazil back, and with only three points it will come at a desperate and clincal time, also saving Morocco’s blushes should Haiti find a second gear, or counter with efficiency.
GROUP D
The USA’s final matchup with Turkey is fascinating when it arguably should not be so. If Mauricio Pochettino does alter his rampant starting XI, Turkey will grow into the game and punish an at times forlone backline. Their problem is themselves though, with 65 shots and counting result in very little to show. Will the Turks be motivated at all?
Australia under Tony Popovic won’t be a team worthy of securing a draw to progress in second place. They will look to reinvigorate themselves after a hapless start in Seattle.
For Paraguay an aptly motivated team saw themselves go from zero to hero when it mattered most, so will this moment prevail or shall Australia keep their heads and gather up on the better seeding for the knockout stages?
Worth noting a draw almost certainly keeps the natrual order sending the Socceroos through in 2nd place, with a Group G opponent, rather unatrually a Doku-less Belgium to content with.
GROUP E
Ecuador’s mission against Germany could be a tall-task, but their defensive best can hold on with a spark provided by a plethera of options going forward, such as Moises Caicedo and the fine wine himself Enner Valencia to carry their hopes of four points and rd of 32 progression.
The Germans feel unfinished from their best however with a longer break and less intensity placed into their first round routing of Curacao, perhaps they will leave the best for last?
The Ivory Coast are abother team plenty capable of 2nd place progression, though a three points tally will mean their vintage best against a Curacao team beliving in a modern miracle to occur and progression within their grasp.
GROUP F
Sweden’s fragilty when facing Japan’s discipline could be a leathal mix capable of shutting out 3rd place progression, the Swedes however won’t be completely down and out, a possession heavy game is likely to ensure, and Japan have dropped the bag from further out before.
The Netherlands match with a distant and defeated Tunisia is really nothing special. Highlights would include Herve Renard’s reputation firing a new gear into the squad, who’s AFCON 2027 preperation begins now, for the Dutch like any pot one team high on points and confidence, exactly to what extent do you rotate?
GROUP G
New Zealand’s high cofidence and scoring ability has been here for all to see. Belgium’s will need a cear disciplined yet clincal approach to avoid a total disaster not just in the scoreline that reflects but with a 0-3-0 record or a loss potentially sending the team home. Play their best though and opportunities arise.
Iran’s spirited and on point defensive outlet now meets an Egypt team that has proudly score thrice late on to hold top spot of the group. It was impressive enough against the All Whites, but Iran’s structure make it far from a guarentee, making the Group table a very interesting real time conversation to have should the pharoah’s be held at bay and possibly down a goal.
GROUP H
Bielsa and Uruguay face elimination with Spain’s growth and depth enough to land the dagger blow, still yet to concede alongside their coming-of-age moment on matchday two.
Cape Verde’s dynamic and confident attacking style is likely to trouble Saudi Arabia and make history. It’s only that there’s one team capable of throwing a spanner in the works at their best, and it comes in the form of a technically gifted band of brothers in green and white, ready to show their truest form and return to the knockouts for the second time, the first of which also occured in the United States in 1994.
GROUP I
Senegal enter in a world of trouble, a late consolation against Norway proved helpful, but still -3 behind and with no points from the two matches. Iraq meanwhile see this as another big opportunity to play their rugged best and disrupt the plans of the de-facto African champions.
France’s meeting with Norway is the ultimate dress rehersal for the Championship credentials, passing comments of Erling Haaland aside, the game promises on all fronts and will leave the Rd of 32 bracket feeling primed for more history regardless of the victory taking slot I1.
GROUP J
Algeria’s come from behind win against the Asian Cup finalists, mean a grudge match with Austria keeps hopes intact. Not too disimilar from the Group D dynamic should they hold on. If they do not and Austria fire back, Group J’s third place progression may be a closed shop.
Jordan have an open message to be their very best and tame the goat in waiting. Argentina have not put a foot wrong, and their desire for more also previews their own title fate in waiting.
GROUP K
The DR Congo have enough talent and experience regardless of the stage to fire themselves through with four points and a crucial win against the Central Asia powerhouse that is Uzbekistan.
The White Wolves have imploaded, with Cannavaro’s appointment always seeming the impulse choice, can they bow out proudly and stop the African Leopards from making their own history winless thus far at the Cup in two attempts 52 years apart?
Colombia’s best is starting to frighten meanwhile, and Portugal found their winning formula with Ronaldo outpowering Uzbekistan, what does it all mean against a higher calibre opponent?
GROUP L
Croatia’s scare against Panama proved there is work to be done, only sitting on three points below Ghana on four, the pending contest between the two will define a new Black Stars era or maintain the Balkans best is still alive and kicking.
Tuchel and England won’t be best pleased now a Carlos Quieroz block was enough to steam the flow, a 2018 re-match with Panama on the mind though and the Three Lions will be certain to highlight their attacking best and rack up the score with injuries abound to the best Panamanian options available.
