Football Australia announced on Thursday that the historic game would see NPL Victoria side South Melbourne host NPL NSW side Sydney Olympic at Lakeside Stadium on Friday, October 10.

The historic clash will see two former National Soccer League (NSL) rivals renew their rivalry on the national stage. The two sides have played an annual pre-season clash in recent seasons, honouring their Greek backgrounds.

Football Australia CEO James Johnson said that the Championship will help clubs show off their rich histories, talent, and culture to a national audience.

“The Australian Championship will bring a sense of nostalgia to our football community. Genuine rivalries will be on full display to supporters of all generations, and new stories will be created on and off the field,” Johnson said.

“Football supporters across the country will get a taste for what our national competitions will look like in years to come, enriched with talented state-based players and aspirational foundation clubs.

“We encourage fans to visit their local clubs and experience the excitement of the Australian Championship and witness the talent and clubs of tomorrow.”

Football Australia also announced that on Saturday, October 11, Preston Lions will host the NPL NSW Premiers at BT Connor Reserve in another tantalising clash, which should see a massive crowd pack Preston’s home ground, which saw over 9000 people pack in for a clash against South Melbourne earlier this year in NPL Victoria action.

Round Two action will see APIA Leichhardt host Sydney United 58 at Leichhardt Oval on Friday, October 17, and Wollongong Wolves host the NPL Victoria Premiers on Saturday, October 18 at WIN Stadium in Wollongong.

The full fixture list, further participating clubs, and broadcast details will be announced before the competition kicks off with the South Melbourne vs Sydney Olympic clash.
