A weekend of both Australian success and misfortune across Europe saw several Aussies play key roles in their respective teams’ victories and a season-ending injury.

From Bundesliga triumphs to EFL Championship heroics, our Aussies Abroad continue to shine bright in Europe.

Irvine’s Captaincy Leads St Pauli to Historic Bundesliga Victory

Jackson Irvine played a pivotal role in securing St Pauli’s first Bundesliga victory of the season. The club’s captain assisted the final goal as the newly promoted side defeated Freiburg 3-0. This victory marked a historic win for St Pauli, who hadn’t tasted victory in Germany’s top flight for over a decade.

Connor Metcalfe also contributed to the triumph, coming on as a substitute in the second half. The victory lifts St Pauli out of the relegation zone, giving them a much-needed boost in their quest to stay in the Bundesliga.

“Everything was right today,” Irvine said.

“There was also a bit of good fortune to it, but that’s something you have to earn for yourself.”

Five games into their campaign, St Pauli now sits in 14th place in the Bundesliga, a point above the relegation zone.

Farrell Debuts as Portsmouth Held by Sheffield United

Jacob Farrell made his long-awaited debut for Portsmouth after a lengthy absence due to a knee injury. The former Central Coast Mariner played the full match as Pompey drew 0-0 with Harry Souttar’s Sheffield United, who remain undefeated.

Despite a late chance to snatch a victory, Farrell’s header narrowly missed the target, denying Portsmouth their first win of the 2024/25 EFL Championship season.

McGree Shines in Middlesbrough Victory

Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick labelled Riley McGree as ‘important’ as he played a key role in their 2-0 win over Stoke City in the EFL Championship.

McGree, who returned to the starting lineup after a brief absence due to injury, provided a crucial attacking spark for Boro.

Having won the ball on the wing, McGree set up Hayden Hackney’s goal with a well-timed pass, having also been involved in the opening goal, forcing a save from Stoke City’s goalkeeper before Ben Doak converted the rebound.

McGree’s performance showcased his importance to Middlesbrough’s midfield, as they secured three points with a dominant display.

Aussie Duel in Belgium: Bos Assists Westerlo to Victory

After signing a new contract to keep him in the Belgian Pro League until 2028, Aiden O’Neill’s Standard Liege lost out to Jordan Bos’ Westerlo 2-1.

Bos played a key role in Westerlo’s victory, providing the assist for one of their goals. The win lifted Westerlo into 4th position in the league standings.

O’Neill, who is temporarily donning the captains’ armband, has started all eight of Standard Liege’s games this season as his side sit in 7th with 12 points.

Stensness Continues Impressive Run in Norway

Gianni Stensness has extended his impressive streak of consecutive starts to 17 matches in the Norwegian top tier. The 25-year-old defender played the full game as Viking FK secured a 4-1 victory over Lillestrom.

Stensness has been a cornerstone of Viking FK’s defence this season, contributing to five clean sheets. His consistent performances have helped the club maintain a strong position in the league and remain in contention for both the league title and European qualification.

Former Melbourne Victory players Nicholas D’Agostino and Franco Lino still remain sidelined following injuries faced earlier in the season.

As Tony Popovic prepares for his first matches as Socceroos head coach, Stensness’ consistent performances will undoubtedly catch his eye as Popovic will have the difficult task of selecting the best players to represent Australia. Stensness’s impressive run in Norway certainly strengthens his case for inclusion.
